Discovering the Thought Adjuster:
A Catholic Reflection on Finding God’s Presence Within

Many religions have tried to explain the mystery of the make-up of human beings.
Are we spirit beings in physical bodies or are we merely mortals subject to live a short life in this time-space reality?
One of the most profound teachings of the Urantia Book (UB) is the mystery of the Thought Adjuster—the Divine Fragment of God dwelling within the human mind. It is described as the silent partner of the soul, guiding us toward truth, goodness, and eternal destiny. As a Filipino Catholic, this was not a doctrine ordinarily taught, and therefore it was a strange phenomenon, and we never knew about its existence. It does say in the gospels that Jesus always spoke about the Kingdom of God within or that the ‘Father and I are one’…perhaps this was what he meant.
After two thousand years, this revelatory book (the UB) describes the Thought Adjuster as the “Fragment of God dwelling within the human mind, guiding toward spiritual growth and eternal destiny.” The Adjuster’s mission is to “represent, to be, the Universal Father to the mortal creatures of time and space.” This requires inner openness, which believers often cultivate through stillness. Stillness is not physical inactivity. It is about quieting our thoughts and freeing our minds from external distractions. It is as though we are holding our breath as we immerse ourselves in the belief that we are in the presence of God—in a moment of communion without words.
This activity of non-thinking is quite a new habit if one were never really comfortable without the noise of other people, TV or any gadget. You keep all these things away and shove them aside as you free yourself in total silence. It can be quite unnerving. It is difficult to do and takes a lot of practice to be still especially if you are not used to just doing and thinking nothing and you need to remain in a kind of meditative state.
Which brings to mind (pun unintended) that our minds have a lot to do with how we use it. If we are used to much noise we will not be able to get deep into the stillness and quiet we need to be in the presence of spirit.
What I have gradually discovered is that my mind has many layers. There is the everyday mind that plans, remembers, worries, and solves problems. Yet beneath all that activity, there seems to be a quieter place where I can simply become present. I do not always reach that place easily, but each time I practice stillness, it becomes a little more familiar.
Upon awakening our thoughts seem to suddenly start and all kinds of things start to pile in. We need a certain control to stop the chatter and re-think about what we are supposed to be about in that moment, whether we are hungry and need breakfast or remember things we need to do for the day. Hardly do we give a thought to what occurred when we were in our sleep state, and it’s useless to even consider unless we want to analyze our dreams.
And hardly ever do we switch to our super-conscious minds. We can stop the chatter that tries to squeeze in and clutter the mid-mind. Our normal and unconscious response is simply awareness of ourselves as a living breathing individual. But we can use our own stop/start buttons. Why not push stop and re-start just like our laptops suggest sometimes.
What if we hold all these mental images, set them aside so that we can re-connect our mind to our ‘super-conscious’ selves and from there start to think in a different level of mind. Here is where we can become observant of ourselves as a totally separate individual (but only through this mental exercise). If our thoughts return, we can control the inputs, line up the details and take a closer look at each and every idea that is presented to us for the day. Maybe our thinking process will change, or maybe our actions and words will take on a different view and mood.
Hmmm, it seems a good exercise to try and do daily. Our inner and higher selves kick in and maybe we see a whole new perspective everyday.
